Stella: lighting object by Geoffroy Gillant [interview]

Stella, an extraordinary lighting object designed by young french talented designer Geoffroy Gillant, has recently exhibited in Artifact#H. An exhibition of the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne 2015 that present selected projects from over 500 international candidatures.

Stella is part of the Geoffroy Gillant's Cosmogonies project, which comprises of objects inspired by cosmogonical accounts and personal experiences of contemplation. Stella itself combines a suspended disk of white Carrara marble that evokes the moon and its aura. The marble texture and veneers become translucent when the light effects.

"Stella looks like a lunar evocation, whose essence is revealed by a light from distant light source, detached and “sleeping” on a cushion of sand. The edge of the marble disk has been tapered, with the aim of giving the object lightness." Said Geoffroy to Futurecrafter.

Geoffroy also told us the origin of its astronomical inspired concept.
"The very first inspiration for Stella came after observing the Moon at night and reflecting on the way it radiates light: the Moon does not emit light itself but reflects the light of a dormant Sun. Stella is an interpretation of this principle, applied at a domestic level.

Stella was presented for his MA graduation at ESAD of Reims, 2012. His expectation was to explore the direction and to meet inspiration of his future projects.
We asked him about his current works, he replied –"I’m currently working on a new lamp that will soon be available on my Eshop. Wall lamp Fly Light Wall will be shown during the DMY Design Festival in Berlin in June as part of the New Talents 2015 exhibition"

“For those who live within its limits, the lights of the city are only luminaries of the high sky. The street lamps eclipse the stars, and the glare of the whisky advertisements reduces even the moonlight to almost invisible irrelevance.”
